The iPad was used to support a blended, flipped classroom delivery of a mini-project. The Make Life a Better Place Project was a short project concerning improvement of a local space. Students used the iPad as both a consumption and production tool, and to access reading resources and core activities supporting the project, and instructional video-lectures. As a production tool they communicated ideas and opinions by creating multimedia presentations for the project. Finally, they used the iPad as a mobile fieldwork tool for recording, taking pictures and videos for the project.

Short Description: | The iPad was used to support a blended, flipped classroom delivery of a mini-project. |
Lesson Plan: | This lesson plan is one part of a week-long blended-learning project using the iPad as a mobile learning device. Pre-project Steps 1. At the start, students access a short tutorial video about the grammar target, then complete a short guess and check activity in real-time with the video. 2. Next, students confirm their understanding in a short online Q&A concept check with immediate feedback. 3. Then students take a quiz. Project Steps 1. Students choose a place on campus or their local community and describe it through a multi-media production and presentation about it. Apps used by students for this have included (but are not limited to): Explain Everything, iMovie, KeyNote. 2. Students analyze, determine, and organize their recommended changes the place should have in order to improve it. 3. Students combine their action plan, notes, and videos and images into a multimedia presentation they give to the class. |
Other Notes: | The iPad and its use makes the students more active and engaged learners. It 'reformats' their understanding of their role in their learning, and I’ve done my best to develop and design tasks that leverage these new expectations. Students can work at their own pace; they are encouraged to skip scaffolding tasks and accelerate, as they like. Alternatively, students can take their time, review instructional material, and complete tasks more than once until they get it right, free from in-class distractions. |
