The instructor had students record a description of their best friend using key vocabulary with Garage Band, and then they sent that clip to SoundCloud where the instructor made a QR code from the recordings and posted them around the room. Then students used the Qrafter app to scan the code and then listen to their friends descriptions. They had a checklist of the vocabulary to listen for and tick off.

Short Description: | The instructor had students record a description of their best friend using key vocabulary with Garage Band, and then they sent that clip to SoundCloud where the instructor made a QR code from the recordings and posted them around the room. Then students used the Qrafter app to scan the code and then listen to their friends’ descriptions. They had a checklist of the vocabulary to listen for and tick off. |
Lesson Plan: | Following is a brief lesson plan: 1. Students are divided into teams of two. 2. Students write about their team member using target vocabulary centered on appearance, interests and personality. 3. Students submit this draft to the teacher who quickly corrects errors and returns the paper to the students. 4. Students re-write the description. 5. Students then audio record their description using Garage Band. 6. Students upload the sound file into Sound Cloud, using the teacher's login information. 7. On a PC, the instructor converts the sound files in Sound Cloud (Click on EDIT to get URL.) into QR Codes by pasting the URL into http://www.qrstuff.com/ 8. The instructor prints the QR codes for each recording onto paper. 9. The instructor makes a table of the target vocabulary for students. 10. The instructor places the QR Codes around the room. 11. Students scan the QR Codes with the app Qrafter, listen to the sound files (this requires headphones), and tick the vocabulary they hear. 12. Follow up with a spelling quiz. |
Other Notes: | This method gives students the chance to use the vocabulary in speaking and next in listening. They had to focus on what was being said. They reported that it was fun and interesting and that it helped them learn the target vocabulary. More QR Code ideas: http://www.schrockguide.net/qr-codes-in-the-classroom.html |
